Thanks Faith :) I nearly always use soft late afternoon light and aim towards the sun, either with or without direct sun in the shot. This one doesn't have any direct sun, but it is just out of frame and so creates highlights along the edge of his face and in his hair. I look for a background that's darker and without much detail and these things combined should make the subject standout. Happy to talk more about it if you want, just let me know.
